About Us

Holmfirth Attested Auction Market Limited was founded in 1951 in the heart of Holmfirth, famously known as the “Summer Wine” village. Established by a group of local farmers who each invested £100 to purchase a disused mill, the market was created to meet the growing demand for TT-tested dairy cattle—something not available at the town’s older market at the time. Remarkably, some of those original shares are still owned by their descendants today.

Situated on the edge of the Peak District National Park, the market serves Yorkshire, Cheshire, Derbyshire and Lancashire, selling around 20,000 head of stock each year. Significant investment during the 1980s modernised the site with a new sales ring, expanded penning, offices and a café—later extended to support increasing numbers. The on-site café remains a firm favourite, serving fresh, home-cooked food on all sale days.

Cattle and sheep are sold every Tuesday, with annual highlights including the Store Cattle Show and Sale in April and the popular Christmas Shows in December. A further focal point of the calendar is the Meltham Sheep Fair, held on the second Sunday of October, featuring a special store lamb and breeding sheep sale.
